He would work a full day at Google Erie free chat line then once he returned home his focus would be on his music this would include: writing songs, keeping up communication with his fan base, scheduling concerts and then preparing for work the next day. Hoodie Allen originally worked in the ADwords department in google. As he was very interested in rap and this spurned him on to begin writing lyrics, he would then perform the written raps at house parties his friends attended. (Oh yeah, I think Hoodie had a DJ and a live band backing him.) While no-name DJs playing generic bigroom house is fun, most people left to see the final minutes of the Penn State-Rutgers game.Ĭonsidering I paid nothing (the student activity fee and the rest of the tuition is being financed by my lovely and generous parents), this was a good show.Songkick to track Hoodie Allen and get concert alerts when they play near you. Hoodie had his DJ play for a while after he was done and asked people to suggest (probably via twitter) a place for an afterparty. Even though the people standing next to me were a bit irritating, the crowd was very happy to see Hoodie. (Instead of tilting your head, you can tilt your laptop.) The overall atmosphere was pretty good actually. Hoodie also did a Penn State-themed freestyle. Hoodie’s Penn State Freestyle. Penn State was playing Rutgers during his performance, so he got a nice chant of “ Rutgers!” going. Ironic because UPenn won for number one party school.

He dissed his own alma mater and complimented how Penn Staters party.

(I’m hoping Cher knocks my socks off in a few weeks.) Hoodie knew how to work the crowd. Hoodie’s rapping is unimpressive if you’re comparing it to Twista or Eminem or Biggie or like most rappers, but it works for his music. I got to hear all my favorites, so the setlist was good. Hoodie also rapper/sung the lead single, ‘Dumb For You”, from his new album which is coming out next month. Onto the actual music part: I can’t recall the entire setlist or find it online, but I remember that he performed “No Interruption” because the guy next to me finally shut up. (Don’t get too turnt everyone.) So the crowd wasn’t great, and I couldn’t really see over the giraffe-people. He apologized profusely afterwards, but I can’t imagine how high or drunk or whatever he must have been. Another guy mistook me for his sister and started massaging my neck and touching my hair even though his sister doesn’t have the same hair color and isn’t Asian. He could have been drunk, or he could have just been. There was a student on the left of me who kept shouting throughout the entire concert for “No Interruption”, and it was incredibly annoying. I’m currently unemployed, so I’ll try to get into the tall-people-crowd-pumper-upper industry. One of the guys standing next to me brought up the possibility that these dudes were hired to pump up the crowd. The crowd of Hoodie, however, was comprised of many 6’4″ dudes. I’m not sure I mentioned this in the last post, but the crowd of Foster The People was mostly short girls. Many of my favorite musicians either dropped out of high school, didn’t go to college, or dropped out of college, so it’s pretty cool that he didn’t have to sacrifice his education for his music career. Hoodie graduated from UPenn and actually worked at Google and performed for fans simultaneously before quitting to do music full time, so the dude’s got a serious work ethic. It actually reminds me of “If I Ever Feel Better” by Phoenix a little bit.) (The guitar part in “Small Town” sounds really disco to me. My favorites are “No Faith in Brooklyn” and “Small Town”. Hoodie’s music is still pretty fun to listen to though. I don’t mean to offend anyone it’s just that many of the more gimmicky rappers aren’t as technically proficient or lyrically clever as rappers who use the medium as a narrative of struggle. The acoustics of Alumni Hall were actually pretty good, but I do wear tuned ear plugs which tend to help.Īnyway, Hoodie is one of those college white boy rappers (along with Asher Roth and Sammy Adams and Jason Mraz), so the standards I apply here are different than the ones I would apply to Nas, Andre, Kendrick, Gambino, and Macklemore. This took place in Alumni Hall, and there was a very long line to get in. Even if you don’t like Hoodie, you can’t bash free stuff. The PSU SPA (Student Programming Association but not the computer science kind of programming) got us a free Hoodie Allen concert.
